The Vestland history - A Summary and Some Milestones.
The company Vestland Rederi AS was founded (incorporated) in 1997 by Mr. Jarle Rasmussen.
From that time the future strategy was set with "Full Steam Ahead", both literally as well as figuratively. The Company was to be turned into a modern company, not only by Norwegian, but also by international standards.
Mr. Jarle Rasmussen, Norwegian, President of Vestland Rederi and Vestland Marine have multinational background in shipping and is graduated as Marine Chief Engineer.
He has served 16 years at sea, the vast majority at Tankers, of which 10 years on Chemical Tankers.
Vestland Rederi took over its first vessel in November 1997, the small Chemical Tanker "West Master". Later in December same year it took over the 2 small dry cargo vessel "Gardwind" and "Gardsea".
In December 1998 another chemical tanker was taken over - Mt "West Stream".
The entire vessel was on long term contract to reputable Norwegian charters.
During the past years the number of tankers under operation of Vestland Rederi / Vestland Marine has increased and a total of 17 vessels are/has been under control of the company.
In 2002 the dry cargo vessel was sold and handed over to new owners.
In 2002 Vestland Marine Sp.z o.o. was incorporated in Gdynia-Poland in a direct continuation of Vestland Rederi activities. This company took over the Management function of all vessels that was former under Vestland Rederi's management.
Vestland Rederi still exists under its name with same owner, and today used as a branch office of Vestland Marine. Both companies' has been awarded ISM DOC from Det Norske Veritas.
Gradually during the years the size of the vessel in Vestland Marine's fleet has increased from the first one at 1900 Dwt until 22700 DWT.
Vestland Marine boldest and biggest step into ship acquisition activities during the new millennium was unquestionably the MT "Kihuland" and MT "Taviland", sister vessel of 22700 DWT.
The stakes were high, but so were the yields, in contrast to most other maritime sectors. (It was a great commitment towards larger vessel that characterized the acquisition of the sister vessel MT"Kihuland" and "Taviland" in December 2004).
In 2002 Vestland Marine made up an agreement to incorporate an in house manning agent as well. The company named Vestland Maritime Corporation was established on The Philippines.
This company is partly owned by President of Vestland Marine, and today takes care of all manning related matter for Philippine seafarers.
The company administration worked very hard on a restructuring of the entire company after expansion as described above in order to face future challenges. In 2005 the restructuring began to show results.
One success story has been the development of the marine consultancy company Ramco Marine, 100% owned by Vestland Marine. Ramco Marine is a new company which is entering the international market of ship design, consultancies and many other tasks needed to support ship-owners all around the world.
The company is based in Gdynia (Poland) which gives an excellent position considering the near location of many shipyards and companies dealing with the ship market.
Actually Ramco Marine has people employed with specialization in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering and Electrical Engineering with several years of experience in the field.
Purchases and charters during this time have brought total fleet capacity to 14 ships. This expansion is based on a long term strategy initiated when the company determined that the market was on its way up and responded by expanding the fleet under management, in part by outright purchases but also through long-term vessel charters with purchase options. The strategy has proven successful. We have one simple, central goal, to make sure every customer is treated the right way, by the right people, all along the way.
As the president of Vestland Marine states emphatically, "We are always looking for the right opportunity and the right people, and we have examined more than one possibility for increasing our tanker business." If you want to get an idea of where Vestland Marine is heading, just look at what we have accomplished already. It is now strategically important to add another tanker size line as well as increase the third party Ship management (not only tankers) to the existing shipping activity.
